SLIT Allergy Desensitization

SLIT Allergy Desensitization

Are you unable to enjoy the nice weather because for you, warm weather = allergies? If you’re congested, stuffy, itchy, and feeling like the environment is out to get you, we can help you! SLIT or Sublingual immunotherapy helps reduce allergies by treating the root cause.  SLIT treats allergies by providing low dose exposure of specific allergens to your body to desensitize your immune system to these allergens over time. By providing low dose exposure, the immune system can develop tolerance to the allergens. This reduces the immune systems need to mount an immune response when exposed to the allergen in day-to-day life, leading to more days of less allergies!

How do we determine my allergens?

Before we can create the SLIT vial individualized to you, we need to determine what your allergens are. This can be done by performing a Scratch Test in office. Scratch testing helps determine which allergens your immune system provokes a response to by causing mild exposure of common allergens to your immune system, which leads to an allergic response of redness (erythema), itchiness (pruritis) and hives (wheals). By visualizing and measuring the wheal size of each allergen, we will determine which allergies need to be added to your SLIT vial.

I understand how SLIT works, but what does the treatment involve?

SLIT therapy involves you taking a couple of drops of your individualized solution under your tongue daily. This may be a long-term therapy that requires daily use for months to years. It becomes part of your daily routine as it is an easy treatment that you perform in the comfort of your own home.

What are symptoms of allergies that SLIT can help reduce?

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)

  • Sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itchy eyes/nose/throat, congestion, watery eyes, plugged ears
  • In addition, rhinitis can be a cause of fatigue, sleepiness, reduced productivity, reduced cognitive function, poor sleep and reduced quality of life

Urticaria (hives)
Pruritis (itchiness)
